Plotagon is an app for PC, Mac, iOS and Android that allows you to create animated videos based on a written manuscript with no prior experience of animation. You create your characters, put them in a scene and give them expressions as well as written dialogue that either is played back using text-to-speak or your own recorded voice.
I started working at Plotagon as a Product Designer and Front-end developer. Plotagon at that stage was a young company with an idea of creating a desktop app for people being able to create animated fanfiction videos. The team was growing rapidly from eight people to 25 in six months and we moved to a larger office and my role as Product Designer evolved into taking a bigger ownership in the product.
We decided to build on the idea of creating an animation app for a wider audience and move away from the fanfiction genre to create a bigger impact.
That meant changing the whole visual identity of Plotagon, the characters, branding and colors as well as building apps for mobile devices.
With main focus on UI and UX design I worked with launching the first mobile version of Plotagon and with a background in both graphic design and development I’ve been able to create solutions that work in harmony with the visual universe as well as solutions on how to implement content and features in the simplest, fastest manner.
Later on I took on the role as Product Owner overseeing the work done with Plotagon and being a bridge between the different teams and how they worked.
I often started out with focus groups to get users trying to pinpoint pitfalls in the prototypes to be able to refine a smooth user journey. After iterating on the prototypes and designing wireframes I had to coordinate the developer team and animations team to be on the same page and plan their work ahead. Together with marketing and stakeholders we worked out how to promote the new features and how to gain as much traction as possible. Finally I took the design and implemented it in the product as well as preparing everything for launch with app store materials.
During my five years at Plotagon we won several design awards (Red Dot Award 2015 – Best of the Best, SIIA Innovation Showcase 2016 – Most innovative, Fast Company Awards 2014 – Innovation by Design) and we gained a lot of users creating and sharing their stories. It was a great feeling of happiness to see a lot of younger people using our app to tell stories about their life.
